Faith That Doesn’t Ask

Matthew 16:1-
And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed. (ESV)
Jesus’ purpose was not to convince people to come to him by performing wonders; he came inviting people to come to him in faith. Then, as a response to their faith, he performed great miracles. If faith was required, these self-righteous religious leaders had little hope.

Psalm 103:1-
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. The Lord works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed. He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel. (ESV)

Mark 14:6-9
But Jesus said, Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial. And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her. (ESV)
Application:
All four Gospels record Mary’s example of devotion. Three important lessons remind us how we should love the Lord and not repress those who do good works:
1. Let her alone. We must not disregard or depreciate some-one else’s loving act of service just because it’s not our style of serving. Sometimes envy, ignorance, or hardness of heart keep us from seeing the value of showing honor and praise to Christ.
2. She has performed a good service. Mary’s act was courageous and sacrificial. Christ welcomed her and regarded her efforts. We must not be so practical in our stewardship of resources that we criticize the genuine and beautiful ways others express their love for Christ.
3. She has done what she could. Mary took the initiative. She did an act of devotion when no one else would. She gave of her resources in a way only she could. Some people only talk about what they can do or wish they would have done, but Mary did what she felt led to do.

2 Samuel 12:9-14
Why have you despised the word of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house. And I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel and before the sun.’ ” David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die. Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord, the child who is born to you shall die.” Then Nathan went to his house. And the Lord afflicted the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and he became sick. (ESV)

Jeremiah 9:1
Oh, that my head were waters, and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people! (ESV)
Jeremiah sorrows over Jerusalem. These verses show the intense agony through which Jeremiah passed as he contemplated the ruin of his people. His outpoured grief issued from the conflict between his love for the homeland and his unswerving fidelity to the commands of God

Deuteronomy 1:2
Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged. (KJV)
It has well been said that faith does not believe in spite of the evidence—that’s superstition—but obeying in spite of circumstances and consequences. How much more evidence did the people need that their God was able to defeat the enemy and give them their land? Hadn’t He defeated and disgraced all the false gods of Egypt, protected Israel, and provided for them on their pilgrim journey? God’s commandment is always His enablement, and to win the victory, His people only need trust and obey.

Abide In the Vine

John 15:5
Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. (NLT)
Each branch that continues to remain in the Vine will continually produce fruit. This “fruit” could be new converts, or “the fruit of the Spirit,” or both. The fruit of the Spirit displayed in our lives should attract people to Jesus and thereby make them new members of God’s vine. Jesus’ emphasis here was not to dwell on our glaring inadequacies but to remind us of the incomparable adequacy that comes from our relationship with him.

Love Assumes the Best

1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. (ESV)
What does patient love among believers look like? Such love bears with certain annoyances or inconveniences without complaint. Such love does not lose its temper when provoked. Such love steadily perseveres. Without love, no matter how wonderful the gifts in the church, people will be impatient with one another, short-tempered, and irritable.

2 Corinthians 4:7
But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. (ESV)
People keep treasures in safety deposit boxes and vaults. But God places his glorious treasure—the message that frees people from sin—in fragile, cheap, and ordinary clay jars. In Paul’s day, clay pots had many uses. Made cheaply, these pots held everything from food to fuel. They could be seen just about everywhere—in window openings, near cooking fires, and in marketplaces. If they broke—and they broke easily—they would be discarded.

Welcome to the FaithFactor Podcast w/Bishop K
I am Bishop Keifer R. Bradshaw and I know that life has us on the move. This podcast is to inspire you with an uplifting message to encourage you with scripture and a devotional to uplift your day. Time is of the essence these days, that is why each episode is less than ten minutes in duration. It is my pleasure to serve you and my prayer is that God will continue to bless and keep you. For without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He awards those who earnestly seek him.
